If you look back at your life, you’ll find there are little things you do open you up to a flow of energy and joy. Maybe it’s dancing in your living room, or running or hiking. Maybe it’s drawing, making crafts or writing. Maybe you cook. Whatever it is, when you do it you feel more free and have a deeper sense of who you are. Your focus deepens naturally. You’re “in your groove”. It’s your Zen.
For me this happens when I create with my hands. Whether playing piano as a kid, or through hands-on-healing in my 40-year practice as a massage therapist, acupuncturist, life coach and yoga teacher, creating with my hands is a direct pathway to more energy, satisfaction and sense of freedom. It’s more than a feeling. I believe it is an expression of my unique spirit coming through my human experience.
I come from a family of artists and I’ve always enjoyed doodling, drawing, painting and crafts. After retiring in 2023 I discovered The Zentangle® Method, an easy-to-learn, meditative, and relaxing way to create structured patterns that become beautiful abstract images. You can read more about it below.
In a few short years, by practicing The Zentangle Method, along with variations of the method called Zentangle Inspired Art (ZIA), I’ve created a refuge, a regular place of peace, where my creative energy, focus and joy flow freely.
In 2024 I completed the Zentangle certification program and am now a Certified Zentangle Teacher. Currently, I teach this healing form of creative fun in art centers and communities near my home in Coachella Valley. Perhaps The Zentangle Method would be a refuge to you too.
The Zentangle® Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. It was created by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas, two creatives that realized they were on to something when they combined the elegance of limits with freedom of expression.
The Zentangle Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful abstract images by drawing structured patterns. We call these patterns, tangles. You create tangles with combinations of dots, lines, C-curves, S-curves and orbs. These simple shapes are the "Elemental Strokes" in all Zentangle art. These patterns are drawn on small pieces of paper called "tiles." We call them tiles because you can assemble them into mosaics.
Zentangle art is non-representational and unplanned so you can focus on each stroke and not worry about the result. There is no up or down to Zentangle art. You don't need to know what a tangle is going to look like to draw it. You just need to know the steps. The result is a delightful surprise.
The Zentangle Method is an elegant metaphor and model for inspiring a deliberate artistry in life. For this reason, we deliberately do not include an eraser in our Zentangle Kit or use it as part of a Zentangle practice. We have no eraser in life, so why in a Zentangle Kit?
People of all ages, skills and interests enjoy the Zentangle Method all over this world. Together, they form a world-wide community of passionate and grateful artists, full of friendships, support, sharing and learning. Zentangle art provides a common meeting ground because it is independent of language, age, political views, religious beliefs or any other category that separates one from another.
The Zentangle Method offers a fun way to let your creativity flow freely, connecting with your spirit, and enjoy this present moment…deeply and completely.
